葉っぱ達は絶好調 Greens are looking great
遅ればせながら、１０月こんな様子です。この秋は、果樹園の土造りが主な仕事。チキン達が耕してくれた地面を、もう一度、落ち葉とウッドチップでカバーして休ませます。グミ、アキグミ、シーバックソーンは、パイオニア植物として土を肥やすためと、果樹を育てるために植えています。
Belated, but here is Shiba Forest in October. The main work for this Fall is soil building on the future orchard site. The ground where the chickens cultivated will once again be covered with leaves and woodchips to be rested for the winter. Goumi, Autumn Olive, and Seabuckthorn are planted as pioneer plants, to build the soil, and to nurse the fruit trees.
隣のスタンの協力もあり、アヒルたちの冬の寝床が出来上がりました。物置小屋の中に、藁で囲ったベッドルーム。特注の階段も付いています。これなら、雨でも寒くても、ラクーン（アライグマ）が来ても大丈夫。新しい庭も気に入ったみたい。近くにいてくれると、安心です。
Thanks to the neighbour Stan’s hard work, the ducks have their winter home. Their crate is now inside the shed, enclosed in a straw-bale fort. They even got a custom-made, ducks-only, ramp. Here, they will be protected from the rain, cold, and raccoons. The birds seem to be quite fond of their new yard, too. It’s great relief to have them close by.

３年前の今日（１０月１４日）、エドモントンの何処かで、この子が産まれました。家にやって来たのは、その次の年の６月２２日。見つかって良かったね！
3 years ago today (October 14), somewhere in Edmonton, she was born. It was June 22nd of the next year that she came here. So glad that you found me, Shelby!

大雨注意報が出る中、大急ぎで鳥たちの引っ越しを終えました。冬は家の近くにいる方が安心だし、キッチンガーデンのお掃除も手伝ってもらえるはず。チキンたちは小屋の下でじっとしているけど、ダックたちはやっぱり雨も好きみたい。
In preparation for the 3 storms that are expected to arrive this week, the birds have moved to their new home on higher grounds. It’s safer for them to be close to the house for the winter months, and also they can help clean up the kitchen garden. Chickens are hiding under their house, but the ducks appear to be enjoying the rain!
ウッドチップの中で、椎茸の菌糸が育っています。真っ白で雪の結晶みたい。奥には、今年の春に種付けした原木も。春には自家製の椎茸が食べられそう！
Inside the woodchips, Shiitake mycelium is growing nicely. They are as white and fluffy as snow flakes. In the back, there are also some logs inoculated last spring. Looking forward to homegrown Shiitake mushrooms in the spring!
もう本格的な秋。連日雨です。ちょっとした合間を縫って、まだ乾ききっていない豆も緑のトマトも取り入れました。このまま上手く熟してくれる事を、祈っています。
It’s really the Fall now. Rain every day. All dry beans and green tomatoes had to be picked, even though they’re not ready. Pray that the beans will dry properly and the tomatoes can ripen off the vine.
隣のアネットの家で採れたブドウを、ジュースにしました。いつも通りの、スチームで煮だす方法の他に、実をそのまま瓶に詰めて煮沸する方法にも、初めて挑戦。１ヶ月程待てば、ジュースになるはずです。
More grapes! Some were steam-juiced as usual, and some were just canned whole. They are supposed to turn into juice in about a month.
