チキンのおさんぽ

つまみ食い

シェルビーとチキン

チキンたちが初めて小屋の外に出た。シェルビーはとても穏やかに見守っていた。しかもチキンに近寄ろうとするニオに怒った。守ろうとしているのか、チキン を自分の物と思って取られたくないのか？何を思っているのかは分からないけど、食べようとしなかったので一安心。チキンたちも危機感が全くないのか、抱っ こもできるし、シェルビーとぴったり隣同士でも気にせず。このままうまい具合にいくかな？

Chickens went outside for the first time today.  Shelby only watched them very calmly.  And got mad at Neo when he tried to get near them.  Is she trying to protect them, or does she think she owns them and doesn’t want to share them?  We’ll never know what is on her mind, but it’s good news she did not try to eat them.  Chickens seemed to have no sense of danger that they were okay to be picked up, and didn’t mind, at all, being right beside Shelby.  Hoping this will continue to go smoothly like this.

どんどん芽が出てきます。でも外の苗床にはナメクジが大量に住んでいて、ケールやひまわり、全滅した物も。。。ビニールカバーの中は居心地が良いんだね。今日からはカバーを外して再挑戦。

The shoots are coming up!  But the slugs are having a feast on the outdoor seed bed, decimating a few trays of kale and sunflower….  It must be just so cozy under the covers.  As of today, the cover is off; stay tuned.

サラダ畑

また１つ実験で、こんなサラダ畑を作ってみました。小松菜、ミズナ、カラシ菜、シュンギク、ケール、ターサイ、ほうれん草、ルッコラ等、１５種類の葉っぱと数種類のお花の種を蒔きました。育ちますように！これがうまくいけば、もう１つはレタス畑にしようかな。

One more experiment – a vertical salad garden in a pallet.  Komatsuna, mizuna, mustard, shungiku, kale, tatsai, spinach, arugula, etc… 15 kinds of greens and a few flowers have been seeded today.  Hope they grow!  If this works, there is one more pallet ready to go, for lettuces 🙂

干し草ガーデン

Straw/hay bale gardening-on-trial

また新しい実験開始です。本当は麦ワラだけど、とりあえず干し草があったので使って見た。もう何週間も雨に濡れて、そろそろ良い頃かなと思うけど。ワラはまだ新しいから、もう少し置いてから。自然と分解していく草／ワラの中に直接苗を植え付ける方法で、うまくやれば土無しでも野菜が良く育つらしい。去年から残っていたレタスとルッコラをここに移してみたけど、育つかな？プラスチックのふたの下には、少しだけ土を敷いてニンジンとラディッシュの種を蒔いてみた。どうなるかは見てのお楽しみ。

Here’s another experiment started.  It’s supposed to be straw bale gardening, but there were some old hay bales around, so let’s try those first.  The first bale has been out in the rain for many weeks already, so it might be ready to go now.  The straw is still new so it’ll need a bit more time.  This is a method of gardening where plants are put directly into the bales that are naturally decomposing; if done right, all sorts of veggies should grow without soil!  Some lettuce and arugula from last year have been transplanted into the first bale – will they grow?  Under the plastic, carrots and radishes have been seeded on top of just a thin layer of soil.  Now let’s wait and see….

ラズベリー

味噌と物々交換してもらった、ラズベリーたち（刺無し）。実がつくのは来年の夏です。

Baby raspberries (thornless) traded for a jar of miso.  It will be next summer before they bear fruits….

去年の残り物

ぐるっと一回りしたら、こんなに集まりました。去年から残っていたものばかり。大根になりきれなかった大根達も、葉っぱは立派においしいよ。緑たっぷりのチャーハン、味噌汁、サラダで夕食。

Made a round and gathered this much.  All are leftovers from last year.  Daikon radishes that couldn’t quite grow into Daikon still have delicious leaves.  Loaded greens-and-egg fried rice, miso soup, and baby green salad became our supper tonight.

長十郎

梨の長十郎です。ふらっと立ち寄った植木屋さんで見つけました。４メートルぐらいにしかならない’ドワーフ’だから、小さな柴の森でも大丈夫。授粉用にBartlettという西洋梨を探しています。

Chojyuro, the Asian Pear.  It’s a dwarf, growing only to 4m or so, which is perfect for our little Shiba Forest.  This tree will need a pollinator, probably a Bartlett Pear.

ちび冬柿

千代ばあちゃんの冬柿です。この細い枝が実のなる木になる頃に、柴の森も立派な食べる森になるのかな？他の仲間達もみんな土に入りました。元気に育ちますように！

Grandma Chiyo’s Persimmon (Fuyu).  By the time this skinny stick becomes a fruit-bearing tree, Shiba Forest will be a real food forest, maybe?  The other new arrivals have all gone into the soil, too – may they prosper!
