２月ー木枝の山　February – A pile of branches

４月ーちょくちょく小枝等を追加　April – Little by little, adding more twigs

５月中旬ー芝草や馬糞等、緑の栄養源を追加　Mid-May – Layering grass clippings, horse manure, and other nutritional greens

５月下旬ーもう一段枝を乗せた後、腐葉土等でカバー　Late-May – After one more layer of twigs, covering the pile with composting leaves

少しずつ出来上がって来たHugelkultur,　もう一息。土とコンポーストを被せるだけだけど、量が多いのでなかなかの大仕事。ズッキーニ達が待ちくたびれないように、早くやろう！

The hugelkultur bed has come together little by little, just a bit more to go.  All it needs now is some soil and compost on top, but it takes time, one wheelbarrow at a time.  Must hurry, as the zucchinis await!

今日は天気も良く、元気に飛び回っていた蜜蜂達。コロニーの成長をチェックするために覗いていたら、シェルビーも様子を見にやって来た。で、鼻先を刺されたらしく、必死で鼻先を擦りながら家に逃げ込みこの様子。ちょーガックリしてるのがよく分かる。

It was a sunny and warm day today for the busy bees.  Shelby showed interest in inspecting the hive, and immediately got stung on her snout!  She ran off rubbing her nose, back into the house, looking like this….  Her expression tells it all – she is so bummed.

蜜蜂達は順調に仲間を育てている様子。蜂蜜もたっぷり溜まっていたけど、人の分を取るにはもう少しかな。上の箱が蜜でいっぱいになったら、いただきます。

The bees seemed to be steadily raising their young and growing the colony.  They had plenty of honey, too; but still a while before there is enough for us humans.  Once the top box is full of honey, we will take our share.

最近こんな風に座っている事が多くなった。Lately, she can often be found sitting like this.

もう５月がやって来た。夏のように暑いし雨も降らないので、緑が茶色に変わって行く。葉っぱ達も小さいのに花を咲かせようとしてる。水やりだけで大仕事！今からこれじゃあ夏をどう乗り切るかな？アヤちゃんだけはいつ見ても穏やか。

May has already arrived.  It is hot as summer, and there has been no rain….  Green is turning to brown.  Tiny greens are going to seed already.  It’s a big job just to keep them watered. If it’s like this now, how will we survive the summer? Only Aja looks peaceful all the time.

今年種付けした椎茸ホダ木　Inoculated Shiitake logs

これまた実験の椎茸、２１本到着しました。このおっきな木の下に４０本置く予定。２年後には椎茸が食べられるかな？

Yet another experiment, 21 logs of Shiitake has arrived.  The plan is to have 40 logs here under the big tree.  In 2 years, we should have some Shiitake.

満足そうに帰路につく。　On their way home, contented.

今日柴の森の主たちは、ナナイモの沖にあるニューキャッスル島まで遠足に行きました。ビクトリアの柴犬クラブからのお誘いで、柴犬１２頭と人間１５人でお散歩。来ていた犬達の多くが、ニオの甥っ子か姪っ子だった。ニオのお父さんは偉大な有名犬なんだね。今度は家の隣のアネットの庭で柴犬ピクニックを開催する約束をした。柴の森にも柴犬がたくさん来てくれるかな？

Today, the guardians of Shiba Forest went on an outing to Newcastle Island, off the coast of Nanaimo.  We were invited by the Victoria Shiba Inu Group for this walk, with 12 Shibas and 15 humans.  Many of the dogs that were there happened to be Neo’s nephews and nieces; Neo’s dad is a great, famous dog!  For next time, we promised to host a Shiba picnic at our neighbour’s place, later in the summer.  Will there be a bunch of Shibas in Shiba Forest, perhaps?

一日の仕事を終えておつかれのようです。

今日は１日柴の森で過ごす事が出来た。数分観察していただけで、蜂５種類、チョウチョ２種類、蟻、てんとう虫、蛇と、数種類の小鳥達が、皆忙しそうに働いているのが見えた。植物達もぐんぐんと成長しているのが良く分かります。

One whole day spent at Shiba Forest.  In just a few minutes of observations, there were 5 kinds of bees, 2 kinds of butterflies, ants, ladybugs, snakes, and a few kinds of song birds, all busily working away.  Plants are growing up fast, too!

多分、蛇がいたんだろう。

彩子が蒔いた種かなあ？風で飛んだのか、いろんな所に花が咲いてる。お花畑があるはずの場所には無いんだけど。。。

Are these from the seeds Ayako had sown?  They must  have gotten blown in the wind because they are showing up in all sorts of places, EXCEPT in her flower garden….
