大智のチビたまごが少し大きくなった！左のが最初ので、右のが普通サイズ。

Daichi’s tiny egg got a little bigger!  On the left is the one from before, and on the right is the regular size.

オドリコソウの蜜集め

ここ数日晴れの日が続き、蜜蜂達も忙しそうに飛び回りだした。まだ花は少ないけれど、オドリコソウが好きみたい。熊蜂や他の虫達も大勢やって来る。一般では雑草と呼ばれる草も、柴の森では大切な命の源です。

Warmed by the sun, the honey bees have been flying!  There are still few flowers around, but they seem to like the dead nettles.  Bumble bees and other insects all come visit, too.  Common ‘weeds’ elsewhere are valuable source of life at Shiba Forest.

イラクサ

春になるとそろって顔を出す、セイヨウイラクサ（日本のとは少し違うみたい）。ビタミンやミネラルが豊富で、冬を越して来た身体に元気をくれる。ベジタリアンにはありがたい鉄分も含まれてるんだって。春には欠かせない食材です。今年初のイラクサは味噌汁でいただきました。おいしかった！

When spring arrives, these stinging nettles stick their heads up without fail.  The new leaves are loaded with vitamins and minerals that help recharge our bodies after a long winter.  They are also high in iron and calcium, which is helpful for vegetarians – it’s a spring must have 🙂  This year’s first nettle was appreciated greatly in a tasty miso soup!

バーニーの御殿　Bernie’s Palace

シェルビーによると、ここがバーニーサンダース（柴の森のねずみ）の住処だそうです。夜な夜なチキン達のおこぼれを食べに行っているそうですが、目撃者はシェルビーのみ。天井裏で暮らしていたのは、どうやら別の一匹、ヒラリーだったみたい。数日前、間違って家の中に入って来てしまったので捕まり、少し離れた森に移動しました。元気にやってるといいけど。

According to Shelby, this is where Bernie Sanders, the rat of Shiba Forest, resides.  He appears to be visiting the House of Chickens during the night to munch on leftovers, but the only witness has been Shelby so far.  The rat who lived in the ceiling turned out to be another individual, Hilary.  A few days ago, she wondered into the trailer, was captured and released into the woods nearby.  Wishing her the best of luck out there.

土づくり　Soil-building

近所の庭師さん達に譲ってもらった’ゴミ’の山。数年経てばまた土として蘇り、柴の森で新しい命を育てます。

Piles of yard ‘waste’ given to us by local landscapers.  In a few years, they will become revived as soil again, and nurture new lives at Shiba Forest.

今朝はお疲れだったようです。紹介が遅れましたが、柴第一号のシェルビー（左、２歳）と第三号のニオ（右、１２歳）。第２号の紹介は次の機会に。みんな飼い主の都合でホームレスになりかけ、何かの縁で家にやってきました。今は柴の森の主として元気に生きています！

It was a slow morning for them….  Please excuse this belated introduction of the fluffy ones.  Shiba Inu #1 Shelby (Left, 2-years old) and #3 Neo (Right, 12-years old).  The #2 will introduce herself in another post (she is deep in her sleep at the moment).  All three were about to become homeless when ‘chance’ brought us together.  These days, they are living their lives to the fullest as proud guardians of Shiba Forest!

Start of a Hugelkultur　フーゲルカルチャー

今日は柴の森は休息の日。ノアの箱船が欲しくなるくらいの大雨だったのに、ここの土は水はけ抜群で、水たまりの一つも残らず。

Today was a day of rest at Shiba Forest.  The stormy rain continued for the second day; so much so that neighbours started talking about Noah’s Ark.  Still, now that the rain has passed, not even one puddle is left in sight.  Drainage is not a concern here!

この機会に、ただいま進行中のプロジェクトの一つを紹介します。Hugelkulturという、オーストリアのパーマカルチャリストが紹介した苗床の作り方です。この様に土の中に木を埋めると、水分が保たれ（傾斜に直角になるよう穴を掘ってあるので、水の動きも止まるはず）、分解の過程で熱と肥料が発生して、自然に植物が良く育つ仕組みになっている。苗床の面積も広がり、場所によって微妙な気候の違いが出て、より幅広い植物が一緒に育つ環境が出来る。らしい。秋から材料を集め、おかあの協力もあり、ここまで出来ました。今蒔いている種が芽を出し大きくなる頃には、準備が出来てると良いのですが。。。

So, let me take this opportunity to introduce one of our ongoing projects.  It is called Hugelkultur; a brilliant technique of making raised beds, introduced by an Austrian Permaculturalist.  Rotting logs and other woody things are buried under the soil like this, which helps hold water (the trench is dug along the contour of the land, so the flow of water stops here, too), produces heat from decomposition, and slowly releases nutrients as the plants grow.  It also increases the planting surface, and creates different microclimates depending on the position on the raised bed.  This way, a wider variety of plants can naturally coexist on this Hugelkultur.  Supposedly….  Materials have been gathering here since last Fall, and with Mom’s help during her stay, it has come this far.  Hope is that the bed will be ready by the time the newly planted seeds are ready to be transplanted 🙂
